{"id":179626,"date":"2026-01-30T16:08:20","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T05:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=179626"},"modified":"2026-01-30T16:08:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T05:08:20","slug":"ross-river-virus-detected-in-anglesea-mosquitos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/armstrongcreektimes\/news\/ross-river-virus-detected-in-anglesea-mosquitos\/","title":{"rendered":"Ross River virus detected in Anglesea mosquitos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire is urging people in the municipality to take special care to avoid mozzie bites after detecting Ross River virus in mosquitos trapped in Anglesea.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today (Friday, January 30), the shire says it captured the specimens as part of its routine trapping and testing program.<\/p>\n<p>Ground-based larvicide treatment of mosquito breeding areas will continue in line with Victorian Department of Health advice.<\/p>\n<p>Ross River virus has also been detected in mosquitoes trapped in Geelong and Gippsland during recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>People are urged to:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Remove stagnant water which provides breeding areas for mosquitoes around homes, in places like gutters, bird baths, ponds, old tyres, pot plants, buckets and toys<br \/>\n\u2022 Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing outdoors<br \/>\n\u2022 Use insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin on exposed skin<br \/>\n\u2022 Help protect young children. Apply repellent to clothing rather than directly to skin, and<br \/>\n\u2022 Avoid outdoor activity at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Simple precautions can go a long way to help keep us safe from mozzies and the diseases they can carry,\u201d Cr Mike Bodsworth said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We love being outdoors this time of year, particularly during the summer evenings, but please take care and cover up including arms and legs, and use repellent with DEET or Picaridin.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms of Ross River virus can include fever, joint inflammation and pain, rash, fatigue and muscle aches.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/betterhealth.vic.gov.au\">betterhealth.vic.gov.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The shire&#8217;s mosquito monitoring program includes trapping in problem areas, with specimens sent for laboratory analysis which identifies mosquito types and any diseases being carried.<\/p>\n<p>For more information and tips on staying safe, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/surfcoast.vic.gov.au\/mosquitoes\">surfcoast.vic.gov.au\/mosquitoes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire is urging people in the municipality to take special care to avoid mozzie bites after detecting Ross River virus in mosquitos trapped in Anglesea.
