A NEW surf documentary chronicling an attempt to circumnavigate Tasmania by sailing kayak will premiere in Lorne next month.<\/p>\n

Southern Edge follows surfers Torren Martyn and Ishka Folkwell as they navigate the island’s rugged coastline in 18-foot sailing kayaks, chasing remote waves while relying on wind power and their own resilience to cover vast, isolated stretches of water.<\/p>\n

What starts as a test of endurance and seamanship shifts into something more deliberate. As they move slowly around the island, the pair dock in remote towns, meet commercial fishers, long-time locals and coastal custodians, and sit with stories that speak to a deep, practical connection to place.<\/p>\n

The film balances sweeping coastal imagery with the practical realities of the voyage \u2013 exposed crossings, shifting weather systems and the hard logistics of moving by wind along one of Australia’s most unforgiving shorelines.<\/p>\n

Martyn said the journey proved to be far more layered than simply chasing quality surf.<\/p>\n

“We met and spoke to people who had lived and cared for Tassie for years,” he said. “The conversations we had and connections we formed were incredibly special.<\/p>\n

“We were more or less flies on the wall just doing our thing and learning every day from these people.”<\/p>\n

He said bringing the project to Victoria, and particularly the Lorne Theatre, felt fitting.<\/p>\n

“The Lorne Theatre has this amazing atmosphere and is such a great place for film viewing,” Martyn said.<\/p>\n

“We honestly can’t wait to share what we’ve been working on in these dark rooms for the last few months.”<\/p>\n

Southern Edge will screen at the Lorne Theatre on 2 April. It will be followed by a Q&A with Martyn.<\/p>\n

All profits from ticket sales will be donated to Surfrider Foundation and the Great Southern Reef Foundation.<\/p>\n
