{"id":186101,"date":"2026-06-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/armstrongcreektimes\/?p=186101"},"modified":"2026-06-07T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-06T18:00:00","slug":"indigenous-surfers-share-stories-through-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/armstrongcreektimes\/news\/indigenous-surfers-share-stories-through-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous surfers share stories through art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE nation&#8217;s best Indigenous surfers put on a show at Djarrak\/Bells Beach last weekend, but before anyone hit the water, the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles opened with a celebration of art, culture and community.<\/p>\n<p>Featuring works from competitors and members of the broader surfing community, the exhibition set the tone for the days ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Worimi man and Surf Coast local Gerard Black contributed to the event artwork and exhibited a surfboard transformed into a canvas.<\/p>\n<p>After years of surfing on the board, Black used it to tell a story about home, connection and community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The works that I&#8217;m doing at the moment, they&#8217;re called gunyas, and they&#8217;re essentially homes or houses in my language,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/IMG_3546_42971.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gerard Bleck is one of the many surfers who had artwork exhibited. Photo: Tahlia Sinclair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m Worimi from northern New South Wales but I&#8217;ve lived here in Torquay since I was six.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Growing up, my dad worked for Quicksilver, so a big part of surfing industry and the community here, but the gunya itself really represents community, represents our mob going out on country, collecting the water, catching food to sustain themselves while they do build their houses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All of the ropes, the sinews, getting the axes and what that would have taken.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It shows that whole community journey and connecting. It&#8217;s not the house itself \u2013 it&#8217;s everything that it takes to actually build it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Black said the exhibition provided an opportunity for competitors to connect before the contest began.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/IMG_3549_42975.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Event organiser Jordie Campbell. Photo: Tahlia Sinclair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>No matter how many times he returns, he said the experience of surfing at Bells Beach alongside mob from across the country never loses its appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t feel like a competition, that&#8217;s the beautiful part,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You paddle out with friends and mob from all across the country that you get to catch up with and you get moments where you forget you&#8217;re actually competing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think some use that as a tactic. They&#8217;re both very creative so a lot of our surfers are always attracted to art as well,&#8221; Campbell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve brought artists from all across the country that are competing in the event.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Campbell said the titles provided an important opportunity for mob to come together, share stories and connect through the ocean at Bells Beach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m always excited for this event,&#8221; he said. &#8220;A lot of work goes into it, but it&#8217;s one of the my favourite events of the year because you get to spend time with mob and that really fills your cup.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles were held from 29\u201331 May.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE nation&#8217;s best Indigenous surfers put on a show at Djarrak\/Bells Beach last weekend, but before anyone hit the water, the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles opened with a celebration of art, culture and community.
