{"id":186437,"date":"2026-06-21T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/armstrongcreektimes\/?p=186437"},"modified":"2026-06-21T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T18:00:00","slug":"cultura-welcomes-50th-community-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/armstrongcreektimes\/news\/cultura-welcomes-50th-community-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Cultura welcomes 50th community group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MULTICULTURAL services provider Cultura has welcomed Geelong Tamil Sangaam as its 50th affiliated community group.<\/p>\n<p>Formed less than a year ago, Geelong Tamil Sangaam is the latest group to officially join Cultura&#8217;s multicultural network.<\/p>\n<p>The affiliation provides access to networking opportunities, community programs and practical support designed to help multicultural communities grow and connect.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Tamil Sangaam president Vidya Srinivasan said the group was delighted to be part of the milestone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To think there are 49 different representations of diverse cultures already in Cultura,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a great occasion for us to be the 50th.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will be looking forward to a lot of guidance and collaboration from the rest of the groups as well as Cultura.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/IMG_17401_35724.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Tamil Sangaam president Vidya Srinivasan speaks at Cultura&#8217;s celebration event in North Geelong. Photo: James Taylor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to preserve our rich culture and heritage because it deserves that.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong Tamil Sangaam began as a small gathering at local festivals before becoming an incorporated organisation focused on connecting and supporting the region&#8217;s Tamil community.<\/p>\n<p>The group aims to support students, new arrivals and families while helping preserve and celebrate Tamil culture in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from the southern tip of India, Tamils have migrated across the globe, with Australia and New Zealand home to the world&#8217;s ninth-largest Tamil population.<\/p>\n<p>Tamil is one of the world&#8217;s longest-surviving languages and is officially spoken in India, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Incoming Cultura chief executive Jess Harper welcomed Geelong Tamil Sangaam and said multicultural communities remained at the heart of the organisation&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/06\/IMG_1768_98392.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong Tamil Sangaam member Nivi Petch presented a display of Tamil dancing at the celebration. It is why Cultura is here,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lara MP Ella George congratulated Cultura on signing up its 50th multicultural group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our multicultural communities arrived in Geelong at different times in different places, from every corner of the world,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You speak different languages, you carry different traditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yet you share one story: a story of courage, of heart, of belonging here in Geelong and contributing to our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cultura marked the milestone at a celebration at its North Geelong aged care centre last week.
