THE historic Ballarat Mining Exchange will soon be transformed by Sunnyside, a large-scale art experience shaped through community collaboration with a single internationally renowned artist.
Presented by award winning creative studio The Social Crew, a feature of the event will be inaugural artist Morag Myerscough with Chasing Sunbeams.
Myerscough is known for her use of colour and pattern transforming public spaces.
The London-born artist conducts word and pattern workshops, collaborating with local communities to explore themes such as belonging and identity.
While Ballarat is far from her origins in the Northern Hemisphere, Myerscough said, “Ballarat shares a deep historical narrative with many post-industrial cities I’ve worked in places where heritage and creativity intersect.
“There’s a quiet strength here, a desire for colour and connection that resonates deeply with the values behind my work.”
A specially crafted soundscape by local musician and composer Raul Sanchez i Jorge will accompany the installation.
Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos said Sunnyside will be good for Ballarat.
“We are proud to back Sunnyside through our Regional Events Fund as it will provide a huge boost to the Ballarat economy, with visitors filling hotels, restaurants, bars and small businesses while they explore the region,” he said.
City of Ballarat mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves is looking forward to the installation.
“Sunnyside will be a bold celebration of creativity and community,” she said.
“Welcoming an artist of Morag Myerscough’s calibre to Ballarat is a proud moment for our city.
“These vibrant installations will inspire locals and visitors alike, transforming our historic space at the Mining Exchange into something truly extraordinary.”
Myerscough will hold free talks at Federation University during Sunnyside, offering the public an opportunity to hear about the creative process and ideas behind the work directly from the artist.
Sunnyside will run from 6-23 November.
