EVER considered adopting a dog as a pet?

Then why not a greyhound?

About 15 former racing dogs – hoped to be someone or a family’s new best friend – will be available for adoption at the Ballarat Greyhound Racing Club this weekend as part of the Greyhound Adoption Program’s Super Sunday event.

They’ll include Moonshine and Luther Vandross, formerly known in their racing days as Hondo Lane and Idyllic Luther.

For the first time, GAP will run simultaneous adoption day events across Victoria at Ballarat, Broadmeadows, Springvale and Warragul.

GAP manager Larissa Hubbard said past events in Ballarat had been well-attended and successful.

Moonshine, formerly known as Hondo Lane in his racing days, will be available for adoption at the GAP adoption day in Ballarat on Sunday, May 31.

“That is why we are keen to bring our dogs back to Ballarat,” she said. “We have always really enjoyed holding adoption events up there.”

Just $100 will buy new owners eight to 10 years of unlimited and unconditional canine love.

All greyhounds are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed.

They also come with a lead, collar and a coat.

For those on the lookout for a loveable new couch companion, Ms Hubbard said it was hard to go past a greyhound.

“Greyhounds are generally very low-energy, placid and easy-going jobs,” she said.

“If people want a dog that is just going to lie around and be with them, that is what greyhounds are good at doing – just great companion dogs.

“It’s very rewarding to see the dogs find a home and just as rewarding for the new owners.

“We always aim to put the right dog in the right home. Getting the match right is very important for us.

“Even though people will be coming along to see a lot of dogs, it is really important that we match them up with the right dog.

“At $100, with the dogs desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed, they would have to be the cheapest pure bred registered dogs you could buy in Australia.”

The adoption day runs from 11am to 12.30pm.

For prospective owners unable to attend on the day, greyhounds are available for adoption daily at GAP’s Tullamarine centre.

The facility is open Mondays to Saturdays from 9am to 2pm. No appointment is necessary. GAP presently has 234 dogs available for adoption.
