Seminar to uncover Scottish ancestry
A seminar about researching Scottish ancestry will be held by Ballarat and District Genealogical Society and the Scottish Discussion Circle next month.
Guest speakers will include Jan Mcdonald, secretary of the Victorian Scottish Union, Dr Kevin Molloy, principal librarian at the State library, Joy Roy, secretary of Bendigo Regional Genealogical Society, and more.
Ballarat and District Genealogical Society secretary Carol Armstrong, who will speak about Scottish influence in Ballarat and the Western District, said the day is about providing people with knowledge to discover their family’s history.
“People sort of thing where do I start with my Scottish research,” she said.
“It gives people with clues and hints of what to do and the go away with something practical.
“It’s also a bit of fellowship to meet up with people with the same ideas and just to get together.”
The seminar follows on from one held last year about Irish history, and Ms Armstrong said the event was popular.
“We had over 60 people come along to listen to that and seven speakers,” she said.
“We decided to go Scottish this year because they’ve had a lot of influence right through the western district.”
The event will be held at Ballarat North Community Centre on February 8 from 9am until 5pm.
Tickets cost $35 and include morning and afternoon tea. To register, email [email protected].
