THE Martini Set will bring its swinging sound and upbeat vibe to Ballarat this Sunday 8 February, as part of the Ballarat Jazz Club’s regular monthly program.
The five-piece band features Steven Howard on vocals and rhythm guitar, Tim Nelson on keyboards, Michael Evans Barker on drums, Steve Purcell on double bass and Ash Gaudion on saxophone.
“We’re playing music from the 1920s right through to modern-day Michael Bublé,” Howard said ahead of the Ballarat performance.
“It’s all engaging. It’s all fun. It’s dancing and listening pleasure – just think a shot of Bobby Darin, a twist of Dean Martin cool and a shake of Louis Prima.”
The Martini Set is no stranger to Ballarat Jazz Club gigs, which are held monthly at the Ballarat Golf Club.
“It’s a warm atmosphere, very friendly, very accepting, lots of dancing and lots of good cheer,” Howard said.
Having moved from Sydney to Maldon about three years ago, Howard formed the group after noticing a gap in the regional music scene.
“I saw a lack of swing in the country,” he said. “I just mirrored what I used to do in Sydney.”
Much like its namesake cocktail, The Martini Set has developed a loyal local following and is in strong demand, which Howard puts down to a simple philosophy.
“We’re just out to have a good time,” Howard said.
The music gets started from 2pm on Sunday and runs until 4.30pm.
The jazz club has already lined up its March guest band, the New Brunswick Stompers.
