Helen Ayres, Tim Nankervis and Anna Goldsworthy are returning to the Anglican Cathedral Synod Hall to share their music with the community.

The Seraphim Trio will perform the works of Mozart, Debussy and Tchaikovsky this Sunday, June 1 from 2pm.

“Debussy showcases a young composer embracing his French sensibility and sound worlds in a really convivial and lyrical way,” Nankervis said.

“It’s a sound that just washes over compared to the Tchaikovsky, which is very symphonic, very thickly textured.”

The group recently released their album Radiante which celebrates female composers across 160 years.

Their performance in Ballarat will also include a work by French composer Lili Boulanger who was the first female winner of the Prix de Rome composition prize.

“You look at composers like Clara Schumann and Lily Boulanger who really had to fight their way through to be recognised as composers,” Nankervis said.

“Clara Schummann wrote a wonderful piano trio that we’ve got on our latest album, and she was always in the footsteps and the shadows of Robert Schumann who was vaguely supportive of her as a composer, but not at the expense of his own career.

“It’s not just about that; it’s about the fact that these pieces we perform are all really great works.”

Tickets are available to purchase at the door or on the Seraphim Trio website.
