Winter Wonderlights returns with a year-round bonus for locals
SOVEREIGN Hill’s brightest winter tradition is back – and this year, it’s offering more than just twinkling lights and snowy streets.
For three enchanting weeks from 4-27 July, Sovereign Hill will once again glow with festive cheer, crackling fires, and vibrant light projections – offering a winter experience like no other.
And for locals, the magic won’t end in July.

Anyone living in the Ballarat local government area who purchases a ticket to this year’s Winter Wonderlights can upgrade to the brand-new Sovereign Hill Locals Pass – unlocking 12 months of unlimited entry to the iconic open-air museum.
The pass is an open invitation for locals to make Sovereign Hill their own year-round destination. Whether it’s a casual drop-in after school, a weekend stroll with visiting family, or a quiet Sunday soaking up goldfields history, the Locals Pass makes it easy to return again and again. From gold panning and costumed characters to Red Hill Mine tours and theatrical performances, there’s always something new to discover.

This year’s Winter Wonderlights is packed with fresh features, including a show-stopping projection display that “unwraps” Sovereign Hill’s historic buildings like a giant present. Expect beautifully updated stained-glass animations, Victorian print-inspired designs, and plenty of wow factor as the site transforms each day at dusk.
Also returning are the dramatic Fire Towers – towering industrial sculptures crafted from reclaimed mining machinery. First introduced during last year’s Food, Fire & Light festival, they now form a striking centrepiece near the Wadawurrung Cultural Precinct.

Of course, the seasonal favourites are all back, too: carol-singing choirs, live brass bands, warming winter fare, and the magical faux snow that drifts across Main Street. Kids can get hands-on in a pop-up toy-making studio with The Furals or stop by to see St Nicholas in his cosy winter hut – just in time to update that Christmas wishlist.
Tickets and full program details are available now at winterwonderlights.com.au .
