Are you up for an enviro challenge?

ALFREDTON Rotary Club are hoping to discover world-changing environment-saving concepts in 2021.

President David Sanders said the Club is running their inaugural environmental challenge to raise awareness of climate change, pollution, and threats to native habitats, encouraging the community to pitch green solutions to big sustainability problems.

“We would like to get schools involved, and other interested individuals that have clever thoughts on ways to have a positive impact on the environment,” he said.

“These could be as simple as adopting a park, highway, or street, or recycling common items around the home to prevent waste, like plastic, bottle tops, and food scraps.

“You might have ideas to green our planet, rehabilitate barren land, launch community gardens, or know of simple ways to grow things.”

Concepts surrounding wind, solar, tidal, or geothermal power generation, or energy savings through insulation, shading and heat-storage could also be explored.

“There will be $1500 worth of prize money, and an opportunity for some mentoring. We want you to think outside the box; no idea is too big or too small,” Mr Sanders said.

“At this stage we have Integra, Findlay Engineering, Committee for Ballarat, Smart Options, Stephen Lewis, PPT Accountants, and Andrew Baird Solicitors as sponsors, with former Federation University lecturer Graeme Hood and Committee for Ballarat CEO Michael Poulton as judges.”

Entries officially opened last Friday evening at the Club’s Lucas Garden Day at Lucas Central Park. They close on Wednesday, 19 May.
