FOR the second instalment in her series, artist Briony Galligan has unveiled her latest colourful mural at Alfred Deakin Place’s annex wall.

Titled A Lover Not a Fighter, the large-scale painting is the final instalment in the City commissioned duo of works and is set to be displayed for the next six months.

Featuring colourful shapes and phrases, Galligan said she was inspired by a misreading of a photo of a jacket from the 2019 Ballarat Frolic Pride Festival.

“In two loops, the text reads, ‘A lover, not a fighter, a fighter, not a lover’,” she said.

“I was drawn to this idea as a model for a fluid state as neither lover, nor fighter, but also both at once, endlessly in dialogue.

“The space is used for so many different things, it’s used for protests, rallies, the Black Lives Matter protest and marriage equality, but it’s also a place where people who work at the uni or the gallery or nearby, pass by and see my progress, it’s been really interesting,” Galligan said.
