BALLARAT East community hub Barkly Square is set to become much more accessible to everyone.

Operator BGT is set to receive a $100,000 grant to replace outdoor stairs with a ramp from Barkly Street, and install automatic, touch-free doors at five external entryways, and two accessible toilets.

BGT CEO Graham McMahon said there are 23 diverse tenant groups in the Barkly Square community, alongside regular visitors, that will benefit.

“They come from all backgrounds and abilities, and that was our vision when we came here four years ago, to be a community hub for the east that can welcome everyone, no matter their background or access needs,” he said.

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle said the centre is an extraordinary space teaming with community spirit.

“From the Ballarat Regional Multicultural Council, to the Rainbow Coffee group meeting in A Pot of Courage, they’re part of an absolute hub for our community at Barkly Square,” she said.

“Of course, it makes sense for us to open the doors to everyone and make it accessible to everyone. I’m delighted BGT applied for the grant and have received it.”

Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison emphasised the warm welcome visitors receive at Barkly Square, and said the accessibility improvements will make it even better.

“This is emblematic of what we want to see more of across Ballarat, and I really want to thank BGT for their approach to making everyone feel welcome,” she said.

“It’s a great outcome for the community.”

The funding comes from the State’s Changing Places and Universal Design grants program.
