AMONGST the picturesque setting of their local bowling greens and Botanic Gardens, the Buninyong Probus Club had their first activity day earlier in the week.

Club members had a go at croquet, bocce, Finska, quoits, duck racing, board games, and went for a short stroll in the sun, enjoying the opportunity to catch up with friends and learn some new sporting skills.

Buninyong Probus Club president Rita Russell said the initiative was funded by a just-under $2500 Community Impact Grant from the City of Ballarat.

“The aim was to improve the quality of life of Buninyong Probus members impacted by the COVID pandemic, and who have been unable to undertake social and community activities,” Ms Russell said.

“During the COVID pandemic, there have been many limitations placed upon older people, who have had many of their normal activities cancelled or restricted, causing anxiety, stress, and inability to manage what were everyday functions.

“Activities to maintain good levels of physical and mental wellness, which are a central component of Probus, are especially pertinent for those of our members who live alone and have been isolated.”

All of the games were funded by the grant and purchased from Ballarat shops, boosting the local business community, and lunch was supplied by the Buninyong Bowling Club.

Bob Whitten, Les Ayres, Patrece Nolan and Pat Ayres were introduced to croquet.

Outings coordinator Robert Thornton said members thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and if the Club could secure funding support again, they would love to run the activity day next year.

“We’ve all been over the moon to get out and about, have a cup of coffee and have a go at something we’ve never done before. The croquet is a first for nearly everyone,” he said.

“We have a getaway twice a year. We have 64 people going to Horsham in October, and the games that have been purchased for the activity day will be taken along and used again, so it’s not just a one-off.”

Currently with 110 members, Buninyong Probus was formed 17 years ago as a not-for-profit, all about friendship, fellowship, and fun in retirement.

Regular meetings normally take place at the Buninyong Golf Club.

“It draws members from local rural and urban communities,” Ms Russell said.

“[Probus’] purpose is to provide regular opportunities to maintain active minds, expand interests, to enjoy the fellowship of new friends, enhance mental and physical health, and wellbeing

“It brings together people from all walks of life and provides activities and welfare support.

“Volunteers coordinate outdoor activities such as cycling, walks and rambling, caravanning, bowls, travelling, getaways, and indoor activities such as cards, art and craft, theatre, movies, coffee mornings, and dining out.”
