Making lemonade, and a difference
INSPIRED by a curiosity for lemonade stands in American movies, a group of young people have given Cafs’ homelessness services a financial boost.
Andrew Sawitsch said his daughters Arielle and Mia had a lot of fun experimenting with soft drink-making over the school holidays, and decided they’d learn to master lemonade.
Hosting a stall with their friends, the girls sold 70 glasses of lemonade and raised a total of $113.
“When I asked Arielle what she wanted to do with the money, she said, ‘I just want to help some homeless people’,” Mr Sawitsch said.
Throughout the process, the girls took the opportunity to learn about the complex social issue.
“Arielle had been to a few cities, and thought that homelessness only affected a few people.
“Meeting with Cafs and finding out where their money would go, she was able to understand that it’s a much bigger issue,” Mr Sawitsch said.
“It was a fun little exercise. I’m really proud of them, but also really happy that they’ve all learnt so much. They have some ideas now for future fundraising as well.”
A Cafs spokesperson said their team is hugely grateful for the support of the children and their parents, and for their community spirit and thoughtfulness.
