BALLAARAT Mechanics’ Institute staff are looking for volunteers to help deliver events in their Minerva Space.

With roles open including for ushering, bartending, ticket checking, and general assistance, BMI venue and events manager Sam McColl said the organisation is in particular need with a busy calendar ahead.

“We’re looking for a whole bunch of new volunteers to join with Minerva Ballarat since we’re getting quite busy particularly with events coming up for Heritage Festival and into winter,” he said.

“This is for people who’d like to come along and get some events experience, particularly people who can help run the bar and help set up and pack down, to help bring arts and culture to Ballarat.

“Volunteering can also provide some value to the person as well whether it’s a boost on their CV, or experience, or in funding their RSA we’re happy to provide that.

“There’s also the benefit that once everyone’s in the building, there’s the value add that we leave spare seats at the back for our volunteers.”

The organisation is in need of about 10 to 15 volunteers.

Induction will include a tour of the building as well as a rundown of what the role will require.

Mr McColl said volunteerism is the lifeblood of BMI since its beginnings.

“The Ballaarat Mechanics’ Institute wouldn’t exist with volunteering,” he said. “Since it started in 1859 we’ve relied on them.

“We have volunteer board members, committee members, even the people who help Rosemary out at the library and help with our collections.

“Without volunteering, I don’t know where we’d be.”

Upcoming events taking place at BMI include the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, and the Alfredton Rotary’s 70’s Retro Dinner Dance both in May.
