YOUNG accountant Carry Fungsi was recently shortlisted in Accountants Daily’s 30 Under 30 national awards program for 2020.

A member of the Chris Packer & Associates team, he has been practicing for two years.

“This recognition has been a surreal moment for me. It shows that if you have determination and persistence, you can achieve anything,” he said.

“Public practice attracted me because you can help small businesses financially, and I like how small business operates. I love working systematically and enjoy that part of this industry.

“It’s been a really good journey so far, and I’ve learnt so much from the leadership of my employer, which is critical to the success of their small business. I’m glad to have a really good support system in my family and workplace.”

Mr Fungsi said its fun and rewarding to be a part of the Chris Packer & Associates team. He was given the opportunity to join the business following an in-person resume drop.

“We’re a small team of 10 staff which works out well because everyone is close, we respect each other, and as a junior accountant here, I’ve had a lot of support and mentoring from my boss and the senior accountants,” he said.

“I’m very fortunate. Our firm’s core values are relationships, integrity, quality and innovation, and we really immerse ourselves in the community, giving back as much as we can.”

Bringing a background in hospitality to his accounting career, Mr Fungsi said he already had a valuable, established understanding of small business operations.

“It’s been a challenging year for everyone, but with a good mentor, I’ve been able to pivot during this time and help a lot of small businesses to get grants from the government.

“It’s a small win for them, which makes me realise how much I value my job as well; helping small businesses in any way possible,” he said.
