SATURDAY 12 April is Record Store Day – a celebration of independently owned record stores.

The team behind Kank Wolverang Records on Main Road is preparing to mark the annual occasion with live bands, disc jockeys, record stalls and more.

The celebrations will include music from local artists and established acts from 10.30am and new release records on offer.

Record collector and Voice FM presenter Lou Kelly will be selling records at affordable prices, and he said it is important to promote music in Ballarat.

“There’s talent in this town,” Mr Kelly said. “It’s always been there, and it’s fallen off… but we’re bringing it back.

“It’s hidden sort of, and it’s got to come out and we like to help it.”

Record Store Day takes inspiration from Comic Book Day and was first celebrated in Baltimore in 2007.

The goal of the initiative is to promote the music community and support independent record stores around Australia.

Kank Wolverang Records held its first Record Store Day celebration last year and co-owner Dan Kalken said it was a big success.

“The shop had only been open for about four months and we had no idea what to expect but it was a phenomenal day,” he said.

“There’s a switch back in people’s thinking that they want to have the records in their hands.

“They want to be able to hold the record, have the artwork and feel an attachment to it.”

Celebrations will be held at Kank Wolverang from 10.30am until 4.30pm.
