Chicago in Ballarat with Curtain Call

CURTAIN Call Performing Arts Studios will stage the musical Chicago on 24 and 25 August at Gay Gough Theatre, Mount Clear.

Director, Lindy Crowe-Procaccino said the cast of singers, dancers and actors, aged between 11 and 50 have rehearsed for six months to share the iconic story of greed, exploitation, deceit and murder, straight out of 1920s prohibition era Illinois.

“The story follows criminals that gain celebrity status for their heinous crimes. We’re staging the high school edition, which still has all the glitz, glamour and razzle dazzle, the music, the magic and the madness of the original musical, but it’s just wrapped in a G-rated package,” she said.

“It’s great music, stunning costumes and energetic routines inspired by choreographer, Bob Fosse, that focus on the farcical nature of the judicial system, all coming from a beautiful talented local cast.”

Sharon Bosworth will perform the role of Cook County Jail’s “brassy” Matron “Mama” Morton.

“She rules with an iron fist, but she loves to give the illusion that the prisoners are all her girls,” Mrs Bosworth said.

She can’t wait to bring the jazzy, vaudevillian, Broadway songs to a Ballarat stage. Recognisable tunes will include All that Jazz, Cell Block Tango and Razzle Dazzle.

“The show has a beautiful score, the dancing is outstanding,” she said. “Hearing the applause of the audience is like nothing else.”
