Circle round in mental solidarity
BALLARAT Mental Health Collective members are inviting people of all ages to their free Mental Health Month community event at Lake Esmond this weekend.
To be held on Sunday, 9 October between 10am and 2pm, the family day will not just include stalls, food, music, and activities, but attendees will be encouraged to surround the lake, and take part in a circle of solidarity for mental health.
The idea to bring people together in this way came from collective member Daniel Richards, who has worked with event coordinator Rael Cartledge to make it happen.
“The circle is to show unity with those whose mental health may have deteriorated given the unusual pressures of daily life brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and current economic conditions,” Mr Richards said.
“The circle will involve a minute’s silence symbolic of those suffering in silence, and numbers depending, we hope those attending will stand in a circle, either holding hands or perhaps spread out and reaching towards each other.
“It’s almost a daily occurrence to read or hear news reports of increasing mental health problems in the community, and we aim to destigmatise and promote a more positive outlook towards those experiencing mental health difficulties.
“The circle will promote unity at a time when it has been missing from our lives, and I expect it will be an emotional and fulfilling experience for those who can join in, if not for themselves, for a family member or friend.”
Over 30 information stalls from organisations working to support people experiencing mental health issues, their families, carers, and supporters will be on site.
On the day the Ballarat Brass Band, Bigger Hearts Choir and SoundCheck singers will perform, there’ll be pot-planting and craft activities, a free sausage sizzle, local army cadets will hand out showbags, and ice-cream and coffee will be available for purchase.
