MEMBERS of local Rotary Clubs are encouraging the community to get outside and do their part for the environment with two Clean Up Australia Day events.
Clean Up Australia Day is held annually on the first Sunday in March and encourages the community to pick up litter and protect the environment.
The Rotary Club Environment Committee will have events on at two sites: Rotary Centennial Park at Mullawallah and the Yarrowee River from Hill Street.
The events will run from 10am until 12 noon, and bags, gloves and safety vests will be provided.
Rotary Club Environment Committee member David Sanders encouraged community members to get involved and out into the fresh air.
“Being out with your family and doing nice things has a real buzz to it, it’s a feel good buzz,” he said.
“You’re in the fresh air and the environment… and you’re teaching the kids about looking after their community.”
The committee also organises year-round initiatives, such as Walk against Waste which encourages people to collect litter when they are walking. “It’s such a simple thing, my wife and I go for a walk most nights and pick up a bit of rubbish,” Mr Sanders said.
“You get a good feeling that you’re doing something nice for your community.
“It’s the one opportunity for us to look after a source we don’t have a second chance with.”
