THE Shire has released Golden Plains Community Bus usage data, following its six-month trial in 2021 throughout the north and south of the municipality.

Fifty-one bookings were made by members of the public to hop on the one day a week bus between July and December last year.

Residents’ requests for improved public transport links to both Ballarat and Geelong were the catalyst for the program which was funded by the State Government, and had additional sponsorship support from Community Bank Buninyong.

Golden Plains Shire mayor Cr Gavin Gamble said the Golden Plains Transport Connections Study continues in 2022, assessing the Shire’s travel needs.

It has been funded by the Department of Transport, and the Community Bus trial data will be considered.

“Council understands the needs for improved public transport and alternative transport options within Golden Plains,” he said.

“Councillors have heard a lot from residents about the need for improved transport options and connections between Bannockburn, Geelong and Ballarat,” he said.

“We continue to advocate to the Victorian Government for an extension of the bus network to connect our northern towns to Ballarat, as well as additional public transport options for residents in the south of the Shire, and particularly the need for a much-improved service from Bannockburn into Geelong.

“Our younger people, senior citizens, people with disabilities and people wishing to reduce transport carbon emissions are the main groups requesting better public transport provision.

“There are also non-drivers, those who may have lost their licence, or are temporarily without a car for example, who still need to get to work, services, or job interviews, and value their independence.”
