Compost leaves this autumn
THE City of Ballarat is encouraging residents to compost or mulch leaves this autumn.
Residents can add leaves to their green waste bin where they will be recycled and turned into compost.
Deputy-mayor Cr Ben Taylor said autumn is the perfect time to embrace composting.
“Ballarat and towns across our municipality are known for their beautiful autumn foliage but once those leaves fall, it’s great to dispose of them sustainably,” he said.
“Autumn leaves are rich in carbon, making them an excellent addition to home composting systems or garden mulch.
“Reusing leaves for compost and mulching helps divert waste from landfill and reduces greenhouse gas emissions.”
The City of Ballarat’s street cleaning team undertake an annual leaf collection program which includes removing them from bluestone gutters.
Residents who require assistance with nature strip leaf collection can contact the City of Ballarat on 5320 5500, online via the City of Ballarat website, or using the Snap Send Solve app.
Residents are asked to advise if the leaves are bagged, piled or remain loose.
Crews can respond faster to bagged and piled leaves.
