Cultural support at Sisters Day Out
A ONE-day workshop for Aboriginal women delivered by Aboriginal women will be held in Ballarat next week.
Staff of Djirra, a Victorian legal and family violence intervention and prevention service, are leading their Sisters Day Out initiative at Ballarat Function Centre on Tuesday 10 October.
Djirra’s manager community engagement Kelly Faldon said the workshop will run from 9.30am to 3pm, aiming to help Indigenous women connect with one another, and link up with services they may need, in a culturally safe environment.
“The upcoming Sisters Day Out is an excellent opportunity for Aboriginal women to come together, enjoy wellbeing activities, obtain information about Djirra, understand their legal rights and options, and engage with services that provide critical support at a time when they need it most,” Ms Faldon said.
“It’s been four years since our last Sisters Day Out in Ballarat and we’re so excited to be back for this special day. Our Sisters Day Out events are such an integral part of Djirra.”
Groups involved in the Ballarat event include the First Peoples Disability Network, Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative, Catholic Care Victoria, Victorian Legal Aid, and Wrisc Family Violence Support.
There will also be a hairdresser, massage therapist, and manicurist on site.
Djirra was launched in 2002 as Aboriginal Family Violence Prevention and Legal Service.
The organisation’s early intervention programs aim to empower Aboriginal women, foster their determination and resilience, while celebrating culture and identity.
