Arts service award for BLOC stalwart
BALLARAT Light Opera Company life member Carmel Flynn has been awarded the Ballarat Arts Foundation’s 2021 Denis Bateman Award for her long-term service to the local arts community.
A BLOC volunteer and junior show production manager for 15 years, Mrs Flynn has been a mentor for many within the company, and part of the executive committee, including eight years as vice-chair.
She was nominated for the BAF award by BLOC president Jason Muller.
“I had no idea I was receiving the award, so I am feeling very humbled and so thrilled. I’m so lucky to be in a position where I can volunteer my time,” Mrs Flynn said.
“The best part about the performing arts, at being with BLOC, is the people. Every time you’re involved with an organisation you meet beautiful, creative, inspiring, talented people, and they inspire me.
“I was initially there to support my children, but then I wanted to stay to create experiences for the other up-and-coming kids. For me it’s all about offering opportunities for young people.”
Ballarat Arts Foundation chair Paula Nicholson said Mrs Flynn received her award at a dinner at the Ballarat Golf Club recently.
“It was a delightful opportunity to meet with our seed funders, the Rotary Club of Ballarat South, which included the presentation of the Denis Bateman Award,” she said.
“It was wonderful to be able to update the club on our progress, and recognise the fabulous efforts of Carmel Flynn.”
Denis Bateman was part of the first board of the Ballarat Arts Foundation, and a member of the Rotary Club of Ballarat South.
Mrs Flynn was on the Loreto College board, and is still on the school’s property and maintenance committee.
She is involved with the St Alipius Funeral Team, and is a judge for the Federation Business School Commerce Ballarat Business Excellence Awards.
