Dirty Pig’s coming to Creswick

A GRAVEL racing weekend is tearing into the Goldfields, promising scenic rides through hidden tracks.

The inaugural Dirty Pig and Whistle bike riding event will run on 15 and 16 May across Creswick and Clunes.

Event director Michael Hands said the event hopes for “mass participation”.

“Our aim is to cater for everyone,” he said. “So, a bit like a triathlon, there will be a pointy end of experienced riders, but behind that will be a whole group of people having a go and trying out a new experience.”

Saturday, 15 May will bring a Cyclo-Cross day to Creswick’s Hammon Park. Kicking off at 2pm, riders can ride as much as they wish, for a single-entry fee.

Cyclo-Cross races take place on courses with terrain changes, sometimes requiring for the rider to dismount their bike and carry it to progress.

On Sunday, 16 May, three gravel racing courses are offered, including an 82-kilometre full course circuit, a 42-kilometre short course, and a seven- kilometre free family ride.

Mr Hands said to come down and check out the occasion, even if you’re not riding.

“While the Sunday is really about participation, the Saturday is all about entertainment,” he said. “We’ll have track rides from 4pm, lights will come on at a little after 5pm.”

“We also have a free Kids of Cross section where families can get their kids onto a bike and let them have a crack at the course.”

On the day, the event will also be raising funds for Dirty Pig and Whistle’s charity partner, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Australia.
