Dog breed group brings social stride
THE trails at Lake Wendouree were littered with waves of canine companions over the weekend as part of a walk organised by a group dedicated to a particular breed of dog.
More than 40 people attended the walk and talk on Sunday morning, hosted by members of the West Highlands White Terrier Club of Victoria.
Committee member Kellie Saunders said the event gave white terrier owners a social outing while showing them what the club is all about.
“Our main aim is to promote the breed and to preserve the breed as well,” she said.
“Apart from being the most adorable breed they’re full of character and they’re just such friendly, happy little dogs. Once you have a Westie you never go back.
“A lot of our committee members are breeders of West Highlands white terriers, so this is a bit of a social event for Westie owners and to promote the club as well.
“I think this might be our first venture to Ballarat. We do try to do a few regional walks so people who aren’t in Melbourne can attend.”
The club was formed in 1978 and currently has about 80 members.
Alfredton resident Tina Daniel brought her Westie, Phoebe to the walk and said it was a great way to get to know her fellow dog-owners.
“I’ve just moved to Ballarat,” she said. “It’s a fabulous community here and I’ve noticed lots and lots of Westies that have been brought from the local area.
“It’s lovely to get together. I moved to Ballarat for the community and this is definitely part of what you would love to do on a weekend.
“I’m not a member but I’m joining today because they do a lot of great things. Phoebe is my third Westie and I’m just about to buy my fourth.”
