A LOCAL fishing club is looking for new members who are wanting to get social.

The Ballarat Anglers Club, formed in 1899, meets on the third Thursday of every month.

Club president Craig Hon said there are many opportunities for members to get involved in competitions with evening events, all night fishing comps and weekend experiences with trophies and awards on offer.

“We’re a fishing club but we look to find members who like the social aspect of getting together and talking about likeminded sport,” he said.

“We get together with various other clubs, so the social aspect isn’t only with the members of our club.

“Over the years our membership has dwindled so we’re looking to influence people to get involved in a club environment and get together and meet new people.

“We had the issue about 10 years ago with the droughts and then we had COVID and the influx of being able to get information on Facebook.”

Mr Hon said his main hope for the future is to keep the club running and get people involved.

“We have quite long history as we’re over a 100-year-old club and we have a really strong relationship with Ballarat Legacy who we’ve been donating to for over 90 years now,” he said.

“I’m 55 now and I originally joined the club when I was 12 so I have been with the club for a long time.

“If you like the social aspect and you want to learn there’s people in the club who are certainly willing to help.”
