THOUSANDS of households and businesses in Bendigo can now access the fastest speeds offered by the national broadband provider NBN Co.

The provider announced last week that more than 46,000 local premises can access the better speeds after completion of its Accelerate Great program, including more than 24,000 that are eligible to upgrade their service.

In a statement, NBN Co said the program had rolled out one of the most significant internet upgrades in Australia’s history as faster wholesale speeds become available to eligible network customers for selected speed tiers on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) networks.

It said Bendigo had seen an 11 per cent increase in average household downloads in the past year.

Nationally, it said the average home now has about 25 connected devices – a number that is expected to climb to more than 44 by the end of the decade.

According to NBN Co, 62 per cent of Australians say they will need faster internet within the next 12 months, and 66 per cent are already planning to improve their home internet performance.

“When the nbn network began, we could only imagine what would be possible,” chief customer officer Anna Perrin said.

The NBN Co Accelerate Great program is making a range of faster internet speed options available to local households and businesses.

“The digital revolution is here. A hyper-connected digital world is no longer a distant possibility but our daily reality, with the nbn network at its core.

“In this digital world, people across Australia are using more data, on more devices, doing more than ever before.

“This trend will continue as new technology emerges and becomes a part of our lives.”

Ms Perrin said the Accelerate Great program was the most significant “uplift” to NBN wholesale speed tiers since the network began.

“They mean we can support Australian homes and businesses to stay ahead of the curve and handle the data demands of today, and the years to come,” she said.

New faster speeds are available under the provider’s Home Fast II, Home Superfast, Home Ultrafast and Business 2000 Pro tiers.
