Gala rebirth for Her Maj
FOLLOWING major renovations and accessibility upgrades, Her Majesty’s Theatre will officially reopen with a gala concert showcasing local talent later this month.
Resurgence will be held on Friday 22 November from 7.30pm with solo performing artists, bands and an orchestra waiting in the wings to bring the 1875 Lydiard Street icon into its new era.
“Resurgence is about welcoming people back to this iconic venue with a bold artistic statement about the future of performing arts in Ballarat,” said the concert’s musical director Sam Boon.
“This special gala event is an evening of music that is as eclectic as the theatre itself. We can’t wait to welcome audiences back to this epicentre of entertainment and share this special evening with art lovers.”
On the bill are Alice Skye, Ballarat Lyric Theatre and BLOC Music Theatre members, Coda Chroma, deborahN, Epicure, Jason Wasley, Juan Alban, Owelu Dreamhouse, Richard Chew with Inscape Piano Trio and The Word of Mouth Ensemble from Federation University Arts Academy, Skyscraper Stan, a 27-piece orchestra, and Stella Angelico.
Angelico is a new Ballarat resident and said it’s a dream of hers to sing with an orchestra in such a beautiful and historic theatre.
“I’m really honoured and grateful Sam has invited me,” she said. “I feel very lucky to be here at this time to bring in the new season of Her Majesty’s.”
The upgrades to the theatre include lifts for performers and audience members, an updated foyer and box office, new toilets, and improved backstage spaces.
As the building approaches its 150th anniversary, City of Ballarat CEO Evan King said the works have ensured generations more people can perform and enjoy the arts within the venue for decades to come.
“This beloved institution certainly knows how to put on a show and I encourage people who want to be a part of this historic Ballarat moment to secure their tickets before they sell out,” he said.
Resurgence red carpet arrivals will take place from 6.30pm and Wadawurrung woman Dr Deanne Gilson will deliver a Welcome to Country. Tickets are on sale at hermaj.com.
