NON-PROFIT organisation Food Is Free looks to have a busy month of offerings ahead of them.

The organisation is set to host three workshops throughout July, including a painting workshop, safety presentation and beeswax wrapping course.

The latter event will be led by FIF secretary Katja Fiedler, who said the workshops share a common theme.

“It all ties into teaching people how they can be self-sufficient in their everyday living and how they can be more sustainable,” she said.

“That all links up with gardening, growing your own produce, and making things that can make life easier and save you some money.

The first event is a fruit and vegetable-themed watercolour class to take place on Sunday, 17 July, hosted by artist Kelsie White at Barkly Square.

The following Sunday, 21 July will see BJW Health and Fitness’ Brett Whitcher teaching garden movement, fitness and safety at FIF’s Green Space.

Fiedler’s beeswax wrapping course will be on Sunday, 31 July with the aim of promoting Plastic Free July.

She said she’s excited to show attendees the ease and accessibility in making beeswax wraps to store everyday items and food.

“I’m really looking forward to sharing those fairly simple skills and techniques to make their own wraps, to look after them and to ditch things like clingwrap and foil,” she said.

“It fills so many different purposes and it feeds into the uniting theme of these classes in so many different ways.

“These workshops will be very creative while also showing how to reduce waste and bringing the community together to learn some new things.”
