Government wants kids hooked on fishing

CHILDREN from across the region will be able to try their hand at fishing over summer with the State Government providing Little Anglers Kits to primary school students.

The initiative is part of a Government pledge to fund fishing, boating, piers, and aquaculture.

The kit includes a fishing rod, reel with line, a tackle box and a Kids’ Guide to Fishing, which presents the basics of fishing safety.

The book includes colour photographs of animals children may see when they go fishing and also tips about bait, fishing seasons and a list of good fishing spots.

“Victorians love to fish,” said Minister for Outdoor Recreation, Steve Dimopoulos. “Recreational fishing is a terrific sport for people of all ages, skills and abilities.

“Our Little Angler Kits will inspire young Victorians to put their screens down and get outside with friends and family.”

The initiative is costing $1.5 million with the aim of encouraging children to get outdoors during the warmer months.

The distribution of the kits is being managed by the Victorian Fisheries Authority and the organisation has also created a video of step-by-step instructions on how to fish.

Mr Dimopoulos said it is important to continue Victoria’s fishing tradition.

“Victoria’s fisheries are in great shape for the next generation to enjoy thanks to our record fish stocking, a net-free Port Phillip Bay and Gippsland Lakes, more reefs and better facilities,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing Victoria’s next generation of fishers set up along our waterways this summer, learning new skills and having a great time in nature.”
