Group gets active for heart health
A LOCAL walking group has started weekly sessions at Lake Esmond.
Organised by Heart Foundation Walking, the aim of the group is to get people up and about more often to protect their cardiac health while also keeping social.
The organisation has the largest network of walking groups Australia-wide.
Group member Cris Yates said she was inspired to join after her doctor said she needed to walk daily to help her heart condition.
“After I’d been through rehab, I found out about heartbeat walking and I’ve been a regular member with the group ever since,” she said.
“It’s peer support, not all members of the group have heart conditions but many of them do, and you develop friendships in the group.
“I’ve always been a fairly active person but I’ve been told I need to walk every day so it gives me days in the week when I know I can join that group and do a decent walk.”
The Ballarat group have four weekly walks in total at different locations including at Lake Esmond where the walk is held on Wednesdays at 10am, and members can choose from a 1.8 or 3.6-kilometre distances.
“It’s about people and enjoying their company, it’s a very supportive and likeable group of people.” Ms Yates said.
“Walking is excellent for your health, and you get the benefits of having a chat with nice people, fresh air and sunshine.”
