COMMUNITY groups have been shown how to make a greater impact during workshops hosted at the Buninyong Community House.

The capacity-building workshops were presented by the Community Bank Buninyong and the Ballarat East Neighbourhood House over two weeks last month, and were attended by more than 30 people from throughout the region.

“Community investment isn’t always about financial support,” community bank partnerships lead Kelly Bevan said.

“In this case, we focused on sharing knowledge and practical skills so community groups can build stronger foundations and achieve greater impact longer term.”

The workshops focused on three main areas. The first, grant writing, offered practical insights into applying for funding.

The second, volunteer recruitment and retention, explored how to attract the right people and keep them engaged for the long haul.

The third, smart marketing, covered low-cost tools and strategies to help community groups communicate their mission, grow engagement and attract support.

“It was great to see our community come together,” Ms Bevan said.

“The energy in the room was driven by plenty of discussion, open sharing and deep learning. It was really rewarding for us to see.

“We also loved doing this project in partnership with Ballarat East Neighbourhood House – that’s what it’s all about.”

The organisers emphasised that capacity-building support represented a vital form of community investment, and would help organisations develop further after the workshops ended.

The community bank and neighbourhood house are already exploring further options for more workshops and training sessions to support the ongoing growth of community groups throughout the region.
