THE City of Ballarat is laying the groundwork for the long-term transformation of the La Trobe Street precinct which includes the former Ballarat Saleyards site.

While no immediate changes will affect current property owners, the council is undertaking further investigations into previously identified issues.

Community engagement is expected to be part of the process, with opportunities for residents and stakeholders to have their say in coming months.

While remediation works now underway at the saleyards are being led by Development Victoria, the City of Ballarat is focused on a broader vision for the area.

This involves developing a structure plan to guide urban renewal across the precinct over the next 20 to 30 years.

Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves said the aim is to shape a future that reflects community aspirations and supports sustainable growth.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine a key part of our city,” she said.

“We’re building on years of strategic thinking and community input to ensure the La Trobe Street precinct evolves in a way that enhances livability, supports new development and strengthens Ballarat’s identity.”

The structure plan will explore options such as the potential for rezoning, improving local amenities and assessing transport and infrastructure needs.

“We know how important it is to get this right,” Cr Hargreaves said.

“That’s why we’re taking the time to listen, investigate and plan carefully. The community will be central to this journey.”

More information, including updates and upcoming opportunities to participate, is now available on the City of Ballarat’s MySay page.
