Lights a bright idea
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor,
IT was superb to read in the Ballarat Times 27/05 edition of the scheduled completion of the rollout of LED streetlights.
Impressively, Cr Belinda Coates cited an 80 per cent reduction in energy use. Undoubtedly another fantastic step-forward on the path to a net-zero emissions city.
Ballarat city council are to be congratulated for the breakthrough. It should be noted though that as early as 2013, six south west councils – Warrnambool, Moyne, Corangamite, Colac-Otway, Glenelg and Southern Grampians – developed a similar plan to replace their mercury vapour globes with more energy-efficient LEDs.
This project known as the Great South Coast Street Smart Lighting Program was completed by the end of 2015.
Ballarat city council is making some superb improvements, but many regional councils are a step ahead in the shift to a greener future.
