Ballarat detectives have charged a man following a string of alleged early morning café burglaries across the city this week.

Police allege three separate venues were targeted in the early hours of Monday 20 April, with cash stolen during each incident.

Investigators say the first burglary occurred about 1am on MacArthur Street in Lake Wendouree. A short time later, two more cafés on Sturt Street in Alfredton were allegedly broken into just after 4am.

Ballarat Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been working to piece together the movements linked to the incidents, leading to the arrest of a local man.

A 31-year-old Sebastopol man has now been charged with three counts of burglary and three counts of theft.

He was remanded in custody and is expected to appear before Ballarat Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Police have not indicated whether the incidents are believed to be linked beyond the timing and locations, but investigations remain ongoing.

The alleged offences have raised concerns among local café owners, particularly given the early morning timing when businesses are unoccupied.

Victoria Police continue to urge anyone with information about suspicious activity in the Ballarat area to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppersvic.com.au.
