Market to focus on environmental protection

THIS month’s Smythesdale Country Market is set to be themed around Landcare and creating a thriving community.

The event, to be held Saturday 20 April, acknowledges the current work of the Friends of Woady Landcare group as well as previous initiatives by the Smythesdale Progress Association and the Dales Landcare group.

The Friends of Woady Landcare group is currently working to revive the Woady Yaloak River at Smythesdale.

Attendees will have a chance to meet volunteers with the Landcare group and to promote Landcare initiatives.

Bill McNeil, who is involved with the market and the Landcare group, said the day is all about showing people practical actions they can take to help the environment.

“Landcare embodies a proactive approach, empowering individuals to make tangible differences in their communities and environment,” he said.

“The April market is a chance to celebrate the spirit of Landcare and embrace a future filled with optimism and getting stuck into something practical.”

Members of Leigh Catchment group will also be at the market with a display explaining the role of water bugs in an eco-system.

Ray Draper, a local environmental consultant will be sharing his knowledge about rehabilitating the river and Bettina Atwill will have a range of activities for children such as bubble wands, upcycled gardens and eco-friendly workshops.

A live performance from the Nancyboys, a beehive display and an array of stalls will also be on offer.

The market will run from 9am until 1pm in the Smythesdale Historic Precinct.
