THE builders of a new multimillion-dollar flour mill in Mitchell Park are reporting “strong progress” on the project.

BESIX Watpac and local subcontractors including Delta Group are involved in the $132.9 million build for George Weston Foods.

The mill – which will create products for George Weston Foods’ MAURI division – is in the Ballarat West Employment Zone and its development has been financially supported by the State Government.

When it is finished, 46 jobs will be moved from North Melbourne to Ballarat.

The eight-hectare site is adjacent to a rail line, which has been earmarked as the future home of an inter-modal freight hub.

The mill will be fully automated and will bring in grain from northern and central Victoria, and will supply operations across the state.

It will also feature a solar system to support sustainability goals and will have provisions for expansion including a packing facility, car parking, roadways and rail infrastructure.

Construction includes installation of 996 precast elements, with 710 already in place.

So far, 4200 cubic metres of concrete have been poured, part of an overall planned total of 5000 cubic metres across 44 separate pours.

BESIX Watpac says the project has created more than 200 construction jobs.

Its general manager for Victoria and South Australia, Al Crosby, said local engagement was vital to the success of the project.

“The flour mill has afforded local subcontractors and businesses the valuable opportunity to gain experience in constructing a complex and unique facility,” he said.

“The specialised work carried out by local trades on this flour mill is helping to build a skilled workforce that will leave a lasting legacy in the region.”

Delta Group’s involvement is a continuation of its partnership with BESIX Watpac following their collaboration on the St John of God Ballarat Hospital redevelopment.

“Delta Group is thrilled to continue our strong partnership with BESIX Watpac on the delivery of the flour mill,” general manager Jason Attard said.

“Our commitment to the region is reflected in our strong local workforce and collaboration with local suppliers, all of whom play a vital role in supporting Ballarat’s growth and development.”

The mill was announced in 2023 and is expected to be completed within months.
