Local leaders are coming together to get behind young people through Big Brothers Big Sisters Safe Futures Mentoring program.
Big Brothers Big Sisters ambassador Lynne Mclennan is joining Janet Dore, Kate Davis and Jodie Downey to promote the Big Brothers Big Sisters Safe Futures Mentoring program and to help raise funds to sustain the program.
“Right now, Ballarat’s young people are facing real challenges with rising rates of violence and youth trauma, impacting lives and shaping our community’s future,” said Ms Downey.
“The family violence incident rate in Ballarat is higher than the Victorian rate.
“In Ballarat, police attend approximately six incidents of gender-based violence a day.
“Tragically, children were present at 45 per cent of incidents (according to the City of Ballarat, November 2024).
“The number of young people referred to Big Brothers Big Sisters in Ballarat with trauma relating to violence and mental health issues that result is rising, adding to a significant waitlist.
“Positive impact occurs through connecting young people with caring mentors, local trusted adults who listen and spend time with them.
“A positive and caring relationship supports young people to learn trust, build confidence, and believe in themselves.
“Mentorship isn’t just support; it’s the change that helps young people break cycles of harm.
“Support will directly fund the training, screening, and matching of mentors who are ready to make a difference.
“Every dollar helps us reach another young person, offering them the chance to change their story and have a safer future.
“This investment is for the long term and will reduce the harm repeating itself in future generations.”
