NINE brand-new Centacare social apartments were opened by the Minister for Housing Richard Wynne in Mitchell Park last week.

Worth $3.6 million and part of the State’s Big Housing Build, the complex includes six one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments, which have been locally constructed by SJ Weir.

Mr Wynne said individuals, couples and families will be able to move into a secure home before Christmas.

“Everyone deserves a safe place to call home and these new developments provide just that, allowing people to live a life of stability,” he said.

“This investment is an opportunity for community housing agencies to work together with private, non-profit and local government partners for their communities, and creates secure housing for low-income Victorians.”

The apartments will cater to singles, couples and families.

CatholicCare Victoria CEO Agnes Sheehan said the apartments will give Ballarat people in need a special and comfortable place to call home.

“As the number of people experiencing homelessness is increases in our community, so to does the demand for secure, affordable housing,” she said.

“The apartments will provide an affordable alternative to public housing and private rental accommodation, and will be… for people on low-to-moderate income.

“These apartments… will enable enhanced wellbeing, build greater independence, and provide increased opportunities for education, employment and community participation.”

Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison said the buildings will “transform lives.”

“These homes will… make a real difference to people who need it most,” she said.

“The social housing developments across Ballarat are proof of our Government’s commitment to tackling homelessness and investing in real and tangible solutions.”
