‘Modi Airways’ takes first flight

TO celebrate Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Australia, Ballarat doctor Sachin Dahiya organised a chartered plane to see the world leader in Sydney.

The flight, which sold out within 48 hours, was dubbed ‘Modi Airways’ and took off from Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport.

Dr Dahiya said it was important for him to see Mr Modi since his last visit was in 2014, with the Indian community in Australia growing significantly since then.

“Last time Mr Modi travelled to Australia was around nine years ago and since then the relationship has grown,” said Dr Dahiya.

“That’s why we planned to travel to the Modi event in Sydney.”

Dr Dahiya said the atmosphere on the flight was of excitement and elation.

“The flight was a showcase of Indian diversity with different cultures, different religions, different dietary requirements,” he said. “There was lots of music, lots of colours, lots of dance.

“Everyone was very excited to be on board.”

The flight also provided a platform for members from a range of different Indian communities to come together.

“Everyone was united and as one,” said Dr Dahiya.

Thousands of members of Australia’s Indian community turned out to see Modi on his trip which was aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries.

The Indian Prime Minister was given a warm welcome at Sydney Olympic Park last Tuesday alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

“It was a very successful trip,” said Dr Dahiya.
