Monkey see, monkey snap
A CHEEKY, nine-metre-high monkey is climbing up the south-east corner of the National Centre for Photography on Lydiard Street.
Lisa Roet’s Golden Monkey installation, inspired by the endangered Myanmar snub-nosed monkey, is part of the core outdoor program of the 10th Ballarat International Foto Biennale.
In this context, the work not only aims to encourage people to look up, get snapping on their camera, and take in the historic scenery of the goldfields city, but to contrast urban and natural environments, highlighting species extinction.
Golden Monkey is part of a broader series of monkeys by Roet, and this visitor to Ballarat has previously been climbing buildings over the world, including in Edinburgh, Scotland. Photo: MICHAEL CURRIE
