Car club keeps on Morryin’
NEXT month, the Ballarat Morris Minor Club will celebrate their 40th birthday.
Suited to people with a connection to a Morris Minor automobile, president Glen Whitbourne said members are current owners or admirers of the vehicles.
“You may have memories of one in the family growing up… learning to drive in one, owning one, or restoring one.” he said.
“We have also broadened to incorporate other English cars. Other makes of English cars certainly have an affirmation or connection with the Morris Minor.
“Some members joined us with a different car, but have since bought a Morris Minor.”
Mr Whitbourne said the public has an “affection” for Morrys. They’re little, but they’ve “lots of personality.”
“They’re fun to drive, and they draw attention in enthusiastic way. People stop you to have a conversation about Morris Minors; they had one years ago or remember them,” he said.
“Those memories are what our group is all about.”
At Hut 56 at the Ballarat Airport, the club has memorabilia to share, and plenty of yard space for barbecues and displays.
“We have around 50 members, with about 60 cars associated and 40 on the road. Some members have been involved since our formation, but we’re getting young people in too, so it’s continuing into the next generation.
“On the second Monday of each month we have a general meeting, once a month we have an outing, and also once a month we meet for coffee,” Mr Whitbourne said.
“We have a couple of favourite cafes, but we do like to mix it up to help out our local community, and it’s good for our Club to be seen at different places.”
Each Saturday afternoon, the Club welcomes members, friends and interested people for a casual chat and a cuppa at the clubrooms. It’s an opportunity for Morry-lovers to brainstorm ideas surrounding car restorations.
“We have a lot of fun, have a laugh and we’re a family-orientated group. We enjoy going out for a meal, out for a drive or picnic to enjoy our cars.”
The Ballarat Morris Minor Club also showcases their vehicles at community events.
The 40th anniversary party will be held on Sunday, 21 March at the clubrooms.
