Music rings through St Paul’s
SWEET sounds are echoing through St Paul’s Anglican Church in Bakery Hill as a group gathers regularly to share their love of music.
They meet every Tuesday from 4pm until 5pm and rehearse a range of songs.
Group leader Anne Doggett said the choir is a great opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy music.
“We are a little singing group that meets together, and our purpose is to give everybody the opportunity to sing in a group,” she said.
“It’s not about getting up and doing wonderful performances, although we do occasionally, but it’s more just giving everyone a chance to sing because there’s not enough of it our community.”
She encouraged anyone who may be apprehensive to come along and experience the supportive environment.
“If people are worried they should come to a group like this rather than going to a choir where they have to audition,” she said.
“It’s somewhere where they come and sing whether they think they’re good singers or not because everyone has a voice.”
Unlike other activities like sports, card games or bingo, the choir is not competitive with everyone coming together to sing.
“Singing is one of the few activities that we engage in that doesn’t involve confrontation and it’s not about taking sides and is something we can do together,” said Ms Doggett.
Barrie McCausland, one of the group’s members, said taking part in the choir has been a great learning experience.
“We get a variety of experience here and Anne choses a remarkable wide range of stuff for us like things I didn’t expect when I heard about the group,” he said.
“Even at our advanced year’s Anne’s teaching us how to sing better than we had before.”
