BUNINYONG horse enthusiast Nellie Tuddenham has helped the KIDS Foundation smash its $1 million fundraising target for this year’s Tour d’Horse.

Riding in memory of her late sister Bella, the 13-year-old reached her own goal of raising $45,000 thanks to generous family, friends and supporters.

Nellie was among 100 riders to complete the six-day Tour d’Horse trek on horseback through tough Hunter Valley terrain, aimed at raising $1 million to help children and families affected by disease, trauma and injuries.

Part of the Petstock Foundation team, Nellie participated in the event for the second time, following its first staging in 2024.

In the saddle for up to six hours each day, Nellie admitted to being dazzled by the breathtaking scenery.

“The mountains were incredible and mustering the cows was amazing,” Nellie said.

“I’ve done a bit of that back home on the farm, but it was better doing it up there.

“It was a tough ride, but also lots of fun. The first year’s ride seemed a lot easier.

“But the important thing is the cause.”

Nellie was spurred all the way on the journey by the memory of Bella who died, aged just 20 days old, after a fight with spinal muscular atrophy.

“My sister passed away in 2001, so I was keen to raise money to help more kids go to camp,” she said.

“It’s a good feeling being able to do something for others.”

Nellie, who turned 13 last Friday, is proud to have a special link to the KIDS Foundation through her nan Susie O’Neill, the organisation’s CEO and founder.

She said she was 100 per cent committed to riding in next year’s Tour d’Horse.

Nellie will have plenty to keep her occupied before then with a heavy schedule of showjumping and equestrian events on the horizon, as well as her Year 7 studies at Ballarat Grammar.

The rising showjumper and equestrian star is eyeing the VEIS grand finals at Werribee on June 14 and the Australian Jumping Championships at Boneo Park in November.

Her dream is to one day represent Australia in showjumping at the Olympics.

Petstock Foundation community engagement co-ordinator Naomi Mancktelow said the foundation was incredibly proud to celebrate Nellie’s remarkable achievement in this year’s Tour d’Horse.

“Surpassing the million-dollar milestone is a testament to the power of community and compassion,” she said.

“We are honoured to have supported Nellie and the KIDS Foundation in making such an incredible impact.

“The Petstock Foundation’s deep connection with both people and the equine community makes us a perfect partner for Tour d’Horse and the KIDS Foundation.

“We are committed to empowering programs that strengthen the bond between pets and people, leading change in creating a positive and lasting impact in our local communities.”
