THE story of Ballarat resident New New Khin demonstrates how a community-based support program is aiming to help local parents take steps toward securing meaningful employment.

Originally from Thailand, New New Khin is a former refugee and mum of three who’s found new purpose through the Parent Pathways program, delivered locally by Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services.

Ms Khin was born into a refugee camp on the Thai border and arrived in Australia in 2005 as a 16-year-old refugee, after her family fled conflict in Burma.

After leaving school, Ms Khin earned a diploma in both nursing and early childhood education and care, going on to run a successful family day care business for several years.

Now a mother of three, including two children with special needs, Ms Khin wanted to refocus on her own goals but after being out of the workforce for some time, she felt unsure of where or how to start.

However, after linking into Djerriwarrh’s Parent Pathways program, she began exploring her career options and rebuilding her confidence.

Through the program, Ms Khin accessed personalised mentoring, local short courses through the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre and referrals to training and employment services.

She has now been able to secure a part-time role as a support worker with Healio Care, where she’s thriving and receiving positive feedback.

“New is doing very well in the role and receiving great feedback from the people we support,” Healio Care CEO Carolynne Smith said.

“She has proven her ability and suitability, and we are pleased to see her growing in confidence.”

Ms Khin has also started working as a playgroup leader at Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre in Delacombe.

“I love the job and always look forward to each session,” she said.

“I have been patient and [have] never given up.”

Ms Khin said the Parent Pathway program has been life-changing for her, allowing her to reintegrate into the workforce, and she’s particularly grateful for the help of her two mentors Len Bauska and Lisa Dinning, who have supported her through the process.

“It is really helpful and perfect for parents who are looking for a new role after being out of the workforce,” said Ms Khin, who has been in Ballarat for seven years now and loves it.

“It is particularly good for parents who have a non-English background who are struggling with where to start,” she said.

“I’m very grateful for this program. Without it I would not be sure where to start. I feel useful.”

Parent Pathways is a free, voluntary Australian Government service designed to support eligible parents of children under six as they consider their next steps. With the help of a qualified mentor, parents and carers can receive flexible, tailored support to assist with future goals.
