AN inaugural festival highlighting services, providers, organisations and opportunities for the region’s disabled is set to launch next month.

The event is organised by Gellibrand Support Services and called Ballarat Community Fest – Celebrating All Abilities.

Gellibrand Support Services general manager Subin Cherian said the event will be their introduction to the community.

“This event is for us to connect with the community so they can get an awareness of what disability and support services are available here,” he said.

“It’s also a way to show them what job opportunities are available. With NDIS, industry is changing.

“It’s not widely known to the community so we’re hoping an event like this will help people understand that.”

Stalls and expos will feature support organisations like Peak Plan Management alongside community advocacy groups.

Event manager Emma Hall said the day will feature more than information on disability support services.

“We’ll have an all-day jumping castle and face painting, an animal farm too. We’ll have prizes and raffles as well,” she said.

“We’ll also have local performer Stella Savy run a drumming workshop at 12.30pm and a singing workshop at 1.30pm.

“We want to have these really fun activities that all abilities can come and enjoy together.”

Mr Cherian said it’s important people are aware of the services around them.

“The people not connected with disabilities may not even know what services are available if anything happens like what NDIS actually is and the job opportunities available,” he said.

“It’s also for businesses and other community members to understand the needs of people with disabilities. We don’t just want disabled people and their carers attending; we want everyone.”

Ballarat Community Fest – Celebrating All Abilities is scheduled for Saturday, 18 February from 10am to 4pm at the Goods Shed.
