NEW cricket nets were opened at Russell Square last Friday.

Six nets have been built, with five for the East Ballarat Cricket Club and an extra one for community use.

They replaced the clubs’ outdated nets which have been demolished.

Works began at the beginning of 2022, with the project costing more than $450,000 and funded by the City of Ballarat and the Victorian Government.

East Ballarat Cricket Club vice-president Mark Simpson said he was thrilled to have the new facilities.

“Today we stand proudly at Russell square used by 2200 sporting participants this calendar year,” he said. “This is the most used venue in country Victoria.

“We need to encourage the council and State Government to keep growing this venue.

“Thank you so much for everyone who’s helped with these magnificent nets.

“The new facilities are fantastic for us and will make a huge difference to our club and our junior program, in particular the safer and more inclusive infrastructure.”

City of Ballarat mayor Cr Des Hudson spoke at the opening on behalf of the municipality.

“We’re very proud to deliver this new and cricket improved training facility and it’s great to know there has already been substantial community benefit,” he said.

“Having the best possible facilities is key to attracting and retaining people at sporting clubs.”
