A NEW windfarm is being planned thirty-five kilometres south-west of Ballarat between Pittong and Berrybank.

The project’s main backer is Squadron Energy and could have a capacity of about 420 megawatts.

It’s the first of the company’s planned renewable energy projects to get underway in Victoria.

Squadron Energy’s head of project development, Alastair Smith, said the proposed windfarm is still in early planning stages and needs an environmental effects statement will be required under the Environment Effects Act (1978).

“We are really excited to get the ball rolling on this major project that will bring benefits to the local community and will make a major contribution to our goals of a net zero future in Australia,” he said.

“We’re committed to being a positive contributor to the communities where we work by sharing the benefits of our projects and supporting communities over the long term through a range of opportunities.”

The proposed windfarm would have up 62 turbines which could provide power for about 260,000 homes and stop 350,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

A statement from Squadron Energy said company representatives will meet with local landowners to discuss the impact of the project.

“Maximising investment in the regional economy is a priority, and we also actively encourage open and regular communication with all local stakeholders,” said Mr Smith.
